02The variants, and how they differ

Indirect assessment

Indirect methods pull information from people who already know the learner: open-ended interviews, rating scales, and records review, gathered without the assessor observing the behavior directly. They're fast and require no direct exposure to the target behavior, which makes them the default first step in almost every FBA regardless of what comes after. Their limit is that they run entirely on informant report, so the accuracy of the resulting hypothesis depends on how carefully the interview is structured and how well the informant actually discriminates the behavior's antecedents and consequences.

Descriptive assessment

Descriptive methods add direct observation in the natural environment: ABC recording, scatterplots, and structured observation forms that log antecedent-behavior-consequence sequences as they occur. This corrects indirect assessment's biggest weakness, an actual observer watching the behavior happen, but it still only correlates events rather than testing them. A consistently co-occurring antecedent or consequence is a strong hypothesis, not a demonstrated functional relation.

Structural analysis

Structural analysis sits between descriptive and experimental methods. It manipulates a specific antecedent variable, most often academic task demand, in a brief, low-intensity format without the full multielement design of a functional analysis. A roughly ten-minute manipulation of task type and difficulty can isolate exactly which demand feature (task length, novelty, error rate) occasions escape-maintained behavior well enough to redesign the task itself rather than build a generic consequence-based plan (Hagan-Burke et al., 2015). It's a light-touch option for escape-shaped behavior in instructional settings where a full FA isn't practical but descriptive data alone hasn't been specific enough to act on.

Experimental functional analysis: isolated versus synthesized

Once indirect and descriptive assessment produce a testable hypothesis, or the case is high-stakes enough to move straight to testing, the field splits along two lines: formats that isolate one function at a time (standard, brief, latency-based, and trial-based FA) and formats that test a single synthesized contingency built from the interview data (IISCA and related practical functional assessment models). Which side of that split fits a given case is a real, ongoing debate in the literature, not a settled question. Trial-based FA in particular has generalized well beyond its original clinic-and-classroom use case. It has been used to identify treatment for a stereotyped, verbal-appearing behavior (Rispoli et al., 2018), and, in a basic-research demonstration with domesticated canines rather than a clinical human sample, to identify reinforcers maintaining problem behavior in dogs. That's evidence about the procedure's structural flexibility across responses and species, and nothing about how to run an FBA with a person (Salzer et al., 2025).

Packaged, team-based models

Some settings need the assessment built into a repeatable team workflow rather than run as a standalone clinical event. Prevent-Teach-Reinforce (PTR) packages a brief, structured FBA together with a team-selected Prevent, Teach, and Reinforce strategy, delivered by the classroom team itself under coaching rather than by a behavior analyst running sessions solo. In elementary students with intensive behavior support needs, that packaged model reduced disruptive behavior and increased on-task behavior when implemented by the team (Ford et al., 2024). A comparable individualized model, FBA feeding directly into a behavior intervention plan built and trained through behavioral skills training, extended this same team-delivered logic to post-secondary special education, raising class engagement for a student with intellectual disability once the supports were in place (Kang et al., 2021). Both trade some assessment precision for team ownership and setting feasibility, which matters most when the plan has to survive without a behavior analyst in the room every day.

03Which one, and when

The real fork in FBA practice sits well before any experimental testing: does this case need anything beyond indirect and descriptive assessment, or does the hypothesis need to be tested. Low-stakes, low-frequency behavior with a clear, converging story across interview and ABC data can often move straight to a function-based intervention without an experimental step. A case gets escalated toward testing, structural analysis at minimum, an FA at most, when descriptive data conflict across informants or settings, when the topography carries real risk (self-injury, aggression, elopement), or when the resulting decision (placement, restriction, medication) demands a method that tests the function rather than one that only correlates with it.

Reach for structural analysis before a full FA when the presenting picture already points at academic demand as the antecedent and the behavior isn't high-risk: it answers which specific demand feature is occasioning the behavior in about ten minutes, without the multi-session commitment of a full analog assessment (Hagan-Burke et al., 2015). It won't tell you the function is something other than escape, so if the descriptive picture is genuinely ambiguous between attention and escape, this isn't the right substitute for testing both.

Reach for a packaged, team-delivered model like PTR when the setting is a school and the case calls for sustained team ownership more than assessment precision. A brief structured FBA embedded in a Prevent-Teach-Reinforce cycle, run and coached at the classroom level, produced real gains in disruptive and on-task behavior for elementary students needing intensive support (Ford et al., 2024), and an individualized FBA-to-BIP model trained through behavioral skills training carried the same logic into post-secondary settings (Kang et al., 2021). That tradeoff runs the other direction from a full analog FA: less precision about the specific contingency, more likelihood the plan actually gets implemented daily by people who aren't behavior analysts.

Whichever format the case calls for, who is going to run it and how reliably matters as much as which format you pick. Live, in-person training builds FBA and intervention competence in special educators more reliably than asynchronous online modules covering the same content, so if the team's own assessment skill is the bottleneck, don't assume a self-paced module will close the gap the way a workshop with real practice will (Dutt et al., 2023). Where trial-based FA specifically is the chosen format and a BCBA can't run every session personally, a pyramidal cascade, train the BCBAs first, then have each BCBA train one behavior technician, gets accurate implementation without the trainer hours a full slate of one-to-one coaching would require (Alnemary et al., 2017), and residential house managers have reached comparable fidelity through direct behavioral skills training when a full pyramidal structure isn't available (Lambert et al., 2013).

Don't assume training alone sustains use once staff are competent. In a large residential agency, remote performance management, goal-setting, feedback, task clarification, moved supervisors from near-zero trial-based FA use to consistent use (Sellers et al., 2019). Competence and follow-through are different problems, and a rollout plan needs a checkpoint for both.

Finally, don't restrict "FBA" in your own thinking to classic problem behavior topographies. Function-based assessment logic has been applied successfully outside aggression and self-injury, including sleep problems and unwanted co-sleeping in children with autism, where function-informed parent plans eliminated the target behavior for most children in the sample (McLay et al., 2019). If a referral doesn't look like a typical problem-behavior case, the same assessment logic still applies.

04What this means Monday morning

On a new referral, start by mapping what you already have onto the assessment continuum before deciding what to add. Pull the informant interview and any existing ABC or incident data first. If two or more sources already converge on the same antecedent and consequence, you may already have enough to write a function-based plan without adding a testing step. If they don't converge, or the topography is risky enough that a wrong guess is costly, that's your signal to escalate rather than write the plan off the strongest-sounding informant account.

For an escape-shaped concern tied to academic work, a structural analysis is often the fastest next step you can run yourself this week: block out roughly ten minutes, vary task type, length, or difficulty across brief trials, and log where responding changes (Hagan-Burke et al., 2015). That single session frequently gives you enough to redesign the task before you'd have finished scheduling a full analog FA.

If the case is a school team case rather than a solo clinical case, consider running it through a Prevent-Teach-Reinforce cycle instead of a standalone assessment. The concrete version of this: schedule a PTR team meeting this week, set one clear on-task goal, complete a brief structured FBA as a team, and leave the meeting with one Prevent, one Teach, and one Reinforce strategy assigned to specific people (Ford et al., 2024). The same team-delivered pattern, an individualized FBA feeding directly into a coached behavior intervention plan, has worked for a single learner in a post-secondary special education setting when a classroom-wide model wasn't the right fit (Kang et al., 2021). Either version is a workflow you can hand to a team and expect to survive without you in the room daily, which a full analog FA usually isn't.

When trial-based FA is the format you land on and you're building capacity across a caseload rather than running one assessment yourself, invest in the training pathway before you invest in more sessions. A short workshop with real practice, not a link to a recorded module, is what actually raises staff competence (Dutt et al., 2023). Once staff are trained, put a light performance-management layer behind it, brief goal-setting and feedback checkpoints, so use doesn't quietly drop back to near zero a few months out (Sellers et al., 2019). If you're the one training BCBAs to train others, the pyramidal model, train the BCBAs, each BCBA trains one line staff member, scales without turning you into the sole trainer for every technician on the caseload (Alnemary et al., 2017).

Keep an eye out for referrals that don't look like classic problem behavior but are still function-based questions. A sleep or co-sleeping concern and a chronic homework refusal pattern both respond to the same assessment logic as aggression or self-injury: identify the maintaining contingency, then build the intervention around it rather than defaulting to a generic behavioral protocol. Function-informed homework interventions have outperformed non-hypothesis-based strategies for on-task homework behavior in students with behavior disorders (Hawkins et al., 2008), the same logic that eliminated co-sleeping in the sleep literature above.

The functional analysis, on the other hand, identifies environmental influences of problem behavior and will inform a specific behavioral intervention depending on a reaction based on the environmental variables. So, let's see the connection. We do have some regulations or rules regarding the use of general functional assessment procedures. Oh, yeah, okay. But they can be broad at times. If a child is exhibiting problem behavior, you're required to conduct a functional assessment, but really any functional assessment will do.

But the very broad strokes, right, you need a functional analysis. We need to identify isolated or synthesized reinforcers. Those things are like the ISCA or the Practical Functional Assessment, the traditional functional analysis, the IWADA in 1984, a latency-based functional analysis, a trial-based functional analysis, a brief functional analysis. You know, you could even extend this towards indirect or direct functional behavior assessments. So ABC data, surveys with caregivers, with teachers, and things like that. Now, obviously, there's that continuum of scientific rigor, right?

06Common questions

Do I need to run an experimental FA on every case, or can indirect and descriptive assessment ever be the whole assessment?
Indirect and descriptive data alone can be enough when they converge across informants and settings and the topography is low-risk and low-stakes. A light-touch step like structural analysis is often sufficient to add specificity without a full FA when the picture already points at academic demand ([Hagan-Burke et al., 2015](https://doi.org/10.1177/0145445514566505)). Escalate to an experimental FA once informants disagree, the behavior carries real risk, or the resulting decision, placement, restriction, medication, is too consequential to act on correlational data you haven't tested.
Is IISCA, or synthesized testing more broadly, simply the newer, better replacement for isolated-function FA formats?
No, and this concept's supporting studies don't include a head-to-head correspondence comparison between the two, so treat any strong claim either way with caution. Isolated-function formats (standard, brief, trial-based, latency-based FA) and synthesized formats like IISCA trade off precision against speed and safety differently, and which one belongs in a given case depends more on setting, risk, and the treatment package you're heading toward than on one format being generally superior. My team knows the FBA steps on paper but trial-based FAs still aren't happening consistently. What's actually missing?
Probably not more training. Getting staff competent and getting staff to actually use the skill are different problems. In one large residential agency, a remote performance-management layer, brief goal-setting and feedback checkpoints, moved supervisors from near-zero trial-based FA use to consistent use after training alone hadn't sustained it ([Sellers et al., 2019](https://doi.org/10.1007/s40617-018-00276-8)). Build a follow-through checkpoint into the rollout, not just the initial training.
Is a recorded training module good enough to prep a team to run FBAs, or does it need to be live?
Live, in-person workshops built more FBA and intervention competence in special educators than asynchronous online modules covering the same content ([Dutt et al., 2023](https://doi.org/10.1002/bin.1933)). If your team's bottleneck is genuinely assessment skill rather than time, a self-paced module is a weaker bet than a workshop with real practice built in, even though it's the faster option to schedule.
Does FBA methodology only apply to aggression, self-injury, and other classic problem behavior?
No. The same logic, identify the maintaining contingency, then build the intervention around it, has worked for sleep problems and unwanted co-sleeping in children with autism ([McLay et al., 2019](https://doi.org/10.1002/bin.1651)) and for chronic homework non-completion in students with behavior disorders, where function-informed interventions outperformed non-hypothesis-based strategies ([Hawkins et al., 2008](https://doi.org/10.1177/0145445508318846)). A referral that doesn't look like classic problem behavior is not a reason to skip functional assessment.
