Relationship between the broad autism phenotype, social relationships and mental health for mothers of children with autism spectrum disorder.
For moms of kids with autism, a rocky marriage—not lack of friends—turns their own social quirks into depression.
01Research in Context
What this study did
Researchers asked moms of kids with autism to fill out surveys. They wanted to know if the mom's own autism-like social traits predicted her depression. They also tested whether bad feelings about her marriage acted as the go-between.
The team checked mom's mood, her marriage happiness, and her social style. They used standard forms that BCBAs see in clinic.
What they found
Moms who rated themselves as more socially awkward also felt more depressed. But the link only ran through low marriage satisfaction. Support from friends or relatives did not matter here.
Child behavior problems still predicted mom's mood directly.
How this fits with other research
Singh et al. (2017) looked at Indian moms and found family support, not partner support, cut depression. The two studies seem to clash, but they asked different questions. Prerna counted any relative help; M et al. asked only about the romantic partner.
Sim et al. (2017) showed higher marriage satisfaction lowered parenting stress. M et al. now show the same link reaches clinical depression.
Callanan et al. (2021) moved the mediator idea to college students. Self-compassion, not love life, buffered their autistic traits from depression. Together the papers say: pick the mediator that fits the client group.
Why it matters
When you coach moms who feel down, ask about the marriage first. Boosting partner communication may do more than adding play-dates or grandma visits. Try simple partner goals: shared 10-minute coffee check-ins, joint praise for the child, or written thank-you notes between spouses. Track mom's mood and marital warmth each week.

03Original abstract
This study aimed to examine the mechanisms responsible for the association between the broad autism phenotype and depressive symptoms in mothers of a child with autism spectrum disorder. A total of 98 mothers who had a child with autism spectrum disorder between the ages of 2 and 16 years completed assessments of maternal broad autism phenotype, child behavior problems, romantic relationship satisfaction, friend support, family support, and maternal depressive symptoms. Results indicated that only romantic relationship satisfaction was a significant mediator of the relationship between maternal broad autism phenotype social abnormalities and maternal depressive symptoms, where greater broad autism phenotype social abnormalities were associated with lower relationship satisfaction, which in turn was associated with increased depressive symptoms. Child behavior problems were directly related to increased depressive symptoms. Implications regarding maternal mental health outcomes within this population as well as intervention implications are discussed.
