01

What this study did

Custer et al. (2021) tested a four-week program for adults with autism. Each adult first watched short computer lessons that showed good conversation skills. Then they practiced the same skills with a peer partner right away.

The team tracked 13 different conversation moves, like asking questions and making comments. Five adults joined the study. Sessions took place in a quiet room at a community center.

02

What they found

After four weeks, 12 of the 13 skills got better for every participant. The adults asked more questions, stayed on topic longer, and took turns more smoothly.

Both the adults and their peer partners said the program felt useful and realistic. The gains held up when the researchers checked again two weeks later.

03

How this fits with other research

Hu et al. (2018) saw the same kind of peer boost with preschoolers who played LEGO together. The adult study shows the peer-practice idea still works after the toys turn into real talk.

LLee et al. (2024) later proved that peers, not just experts, can run LEGO therapy in schools. Custer’s team moves that peer-power idea up to adults and swaps bricks for conversation.

Leaf et al. (2012) used peer-delivered scripts with one middle-school student. They also saw gains, but the skill did not spread to new peers. Custer’s method adds live practice right after the lesson, which may help the skill stick with different partners.

Why it matters

You can copy this two-step plan in almost any setting. Show a quick computer lesson, then set up a real chat with a co-worker, sibling, or volunteer. No fancy room or toys needed. If you serve adults with autism who need job or college interview skills, start with one five-minute video and five minutes of live practice tomorrow.

03Original abstract

Many individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have deficits in conversation skills that can interfere with the development of personal and professional relationships. Further research is needed on efficient interventions for targeting conversation skills in adults with ASD and for evaluating the social validity of the outcomes. In this study, 2 practitioners implemented a 4-week training program for 5 adults with ASD that combined individualized computer-based instruction (CBI) and practice with peers to promote the acquisition, maintenance, and generalization of conversation skills. Training was associated with improvements in 12 of 13 skills across participants. These findings, along with peer ratings of the participants' conversation skills, suggest that this model is a promising, socially valid approach for improving conversation skills in adults with ASD.
