Current Dimensions of Applied Behavior Analysis in Mainland China: A Review of 20 Years of Research
Chinese ABA research shows uneven application of the field's seven core dimensions—check your own studies against Baer et al.'s checklist before publishing.
01Research in Context
What this study did
Huang et al. (2023) read every ABA paper from mainland China published between 2003 and 2022. They scored each study against Baer et al.'s seven classic dimensions of applied behavior analysis.
The team asked: Do Chinese studies meet the same quality markers that define ABA in the West? They looked for applied, behavioral, analytic, technological, conceptually systematic, effective, and generality features.
What they found
Coverage of the seven dimensions was uneven. Some studies hit most markers; others missed several. The authors call for tighter alignment with the classic checklist before future papers go to press.
How this fits with other research
Rodgers et al. (2021) pooled global early-ABA trials and found small-to-medium child gains. Their meta-analysis likely includes some of the same Chinese papers Huang critiques, showing that even imperfect studies can enter synthesis.
Bush et al. (2021) also swept up Chinese trials in their review of ABA for young children with intellectual disability. Both prior works treated the data as usable evidence, while Huang spotlights the missing methodological pieces.
Howard et al. (2023) examined psychometric quality of ABA assessments worldwide and likewise found gaps. Together the two 2023 reviews send the same message: our field's tools and reporting need work, not just in China but everywhere.
Why it matters
If you publish or supervise research, run your next manuscript through Baer's seven-item checklist before submission. Add the missing pieces now—clear operational definitions, replication data, and social-validity measures—so future meta-analyses can count your work as high-quality evidence.

03Original abstract
In the West, the field of applied behavior analysis (ABA) evolved over 7 decades from the experimental analysis of behavior. In this evolutionary process, seven dimensions of ABA emerged: applied, behavioral, analytic, technological, conceptual, effective, and generality. In contrast, ABA was introduced into mainland China only about 20 years ago as a direct result of the rise in autism diagnosis in that country, and only since then has it become an area of research there. The purpose of this study is to critically evaluate ABA research published in China by focusing on its seven dimensions. The results of our review reveal that the level of acceptance of and interest in the seven ABA dimensions varies across the studies sampled. Recommendations for the future development of ABA research in China are offered.
