★ The Verdict

A single parent questionnaire can reliably sort autistic clients into five social-communication levels across the entire childhood age span.

01Research in Context

01

What this study did

Diana’s team asked parents to fill out the ACSF:SC form. The form places a child in one of five social-communication levels.

They checked answers from 217 autistic kids . Then they compared the scores with well-known tools like the SRS and Vineland.

02

What they found

The ACSF:SC levels lined up as expected. Higher levels matched higher SRS scores and lower Vineland scores.

The pattern held for toddlers, grade-schoolers, and teens. Parents gave steady answers two weeks apart.

03

How this fits with other research

de Bildt et al. (2011) and Hus et al. (2014) already showed that calibrated ADOS scores track social affect. The new parent form gives a cheaper, faster way to get a similar snapshot.

Levin et al. (2014) found that ADOS and parent SRS often disagree. Diana’s study does not clash with that; it simply shows the ACSF:SC agrees with both sides, acting like a bridge instead of a referee.

Rogers et al. (2017) proved the SRS-P works for 2- to young learners. Diana extends the idea up to age 19, giving one tool that covers the whole childhood span.

04

Why it matters

You now have a one-page parent form that gives a quick, valid social-communication level for any client . Use it at intake, re-evaluation, or when parents cannot stay for full ADOS testing. The five-level summary also helps explain to funders why a child needs a specific intervention intensity.

03Original abstract

This study examined the construct validity of the Autism Classification System of Functioning: Social Communication (ACSF). Participants included 145 parents of children with autism (2-19 years). The degree of convergent and discriminant validity between parent reported ACSF and subscales from Social Responsiveness Scale 2nd edition and Behavior Assessment System for Children, 3rd Edition were examined against a priori hypotheses. We examined construct validity in the entire sample as well as in specific age cohorts. Our findings suggest that ACSF can provide a valid classification system of social communication ability in children with autism 2-19 years of age, and its two subscales may be used to examine different aspects of social communication ability.
