Direct and distal effects of noncontingent juice on rumination exhibited by a child with autism.

★ The Verdict

Noncontingent juice pauses rumination only while it keeps flowing, so program a fade-out or add satiation meals for lasting relief.

01Research in Context

01

What this study did

Matson et al. (2011) worked with one child with autism who ruminates.

They gave the child free sips of juice every few minutes, even when no rumination happened.

The team watched if the juice lowered rumination while it flowed and after it stopped.

02

What they found

Rumination dropped to zero while the juice kept coming.

As soon as the team turned the juice off, rumination bounced right back.

The juice worked like a switch: on-stop, off-start.

03

How this fits with other research

Parsons et al. (1990) and Rast et al. (1985) saw longer wins. They filled kids up with cereal or starch at meals and the drop in rumination lasted hours, even days.

Those studies used big solid meals. L et al. used small liquid sips. The smaller, quicker dose may explain why the effect vanished so fast.

Silbaugh et al. (2020) also poured liquid non-contingently, but to increase drinking, not stop rumination. Together the papers show NCR liquids can change feeding behaviors in autism, yet the goal and dose decide how long the change sticks.

04

Why it matters

If you try free juice to curb rumination, plan to keep the cup handy. Pair the juice with a thinning plan or add solid satiation snacks so you do not stay glued to a juice drip all day.

Start a 5-min juice drip schedule and plot rumination; if it drops, begin thinning the sip size before you fade the schedule.

03Original abstract

Previous research has demonstrated the efficacy of the noncontingent delivery of foods and liquids at suppressing rumination, the repeated regurgitation and rechewing of partially digested food. However, it is unclear how long this reduction is maintained after caregivers terminate this procedure. The current study examined the direct and distal effects of noncontingent juice on rumination by measuring the duration of rumination during juice delivery and immediately following the termination of juice delivery. Noncontingent juice suppressed rumination, but this suppression was not maintained after delivery termination.
