    What Verbal Behavior Actually Means in ABA

    In B.F. Skinner’s Verbal Behavior (1957), verbal behavior is defined not by words or grammar but by a contingency: behavior that is reinforced through the mediation of another person. When you say “water” and someone hands you a glass, your response worked only because a listener—trained by a verbal community to respond—delivered the consequence. The behavior is “verbal” because its reinforcement is socially mediated, not because it involves speech. By that definition, a signed request, a picture exchange, and a typed sentence are all verbal behavior, while turning a doorknob to open a door is not.

    This functional definition has a practical payoff. It lets us analyze language the same way we analyze any behavior—by its antecedents and consequences—rather than treating it as a special faculty inside the head. It also separates the form of a response (its topography—vocal, signed, printed) from its function (the controlling variables that occasion and maintain it). Two learners can both say “cookie,” but one is asking for a cookie and the other is naming a picture of one. Same word, different operants, different teaching.

    Skinner’s Functional Analysis vs. Structural Views of Language

    Traditional linguistics analyzes language by structure: phonemes, morphemes, syntax, semantics—the units and rules that make an utterance grammatical. That framework describes what language looks like, but says little about why a particular person emits a particular utterance at a particular moment—exactly the question a behavior analyst has to answer to teach it.

    Skinner’s contribution was to analyze language by function: what variable controls the response, and what consequence maintains it. Under a structural analysis, “cookie” is one word—a noun—full stop. Under Skinner’s analysis, “cookie” is potentially many operants depending on why it occurs: a mand when the child wants one, a tact when the child sees one and names it, an intraverbal when the child answers “What do you dunk in milk?”, an echoic when the child repeats it after you. Structurally identical, functionally distinct—and each one has to be taught, because mastery of one operant does not guarantee the others. This functional independence of the verbal operants is one of the most consequential ideas in the whole framework, and it’s the reason “he knows the word” is never a complete answer.

    The Verbal Operants: Definitions, Controlling Variables, and Examples

    Skinner classified verbal behavior into elementary operants, each defined by its controlling antecedent and its characteristic consequence. Two technical dimensions help sort them: point-to-point correspondence (the start, middle, and end of the response match the stimulus, as in repeating what you hear) and formal similarity (response and stimulus share the same sense mode and physical form, as in echoing sound with sound).     The single most important row is the mand: it’s the only operant whose consequence is specific to the response rather than generalized. A mand is under the control of a motivating operation and delivers the exact reinforcer named. That makes it the learner’s first, most powerful tool—language that changes the world in a way the speaker actually wants—which is why VB-based programs almost always start there. Every other operant runs on generalized social reinforcement and is functionally independent of the mand. Teaching a child to tact “juice” does not mean the child can mand for juice when thirsty; that has to be taught too.

    Teaching the Verbal Operants

    Because the operants are functionally independent, effective programming teaches each one under its own controlling variable—then works to connect them. A few workhorse procedures do most of the lifting.

    Mand training: capture and contrive the MO

    Manding can only be taught when the relevant motivating operation is in play—Jack Michael’s core insight about the MO (the operation that momentarily increases the value of a reinforcer and evokes behavior that has produced it). You cannot teach a child to mand for a cookie if the child doesn’t want a cookie right now. So you either capture a naturally occurring MO (the child reaches for a bubble jar) or contrive one (you hold the bubbles, blow a few, then pause). With the MO present and the reinforcer in sight, you prompt the response—vocal, sign, or picture exchange—and deliver the specific reinforcer immediately, then fade the prompt across trials. Rotate reinforcers so no single MO satiates within a session.

    Tact training: pair a stimulus with generalized reinforcement

    Tacting is taught by presenting a nonverbal stimulus (an object, picture, or action), prompting the label, and reinforcing with praise—not with access to the item, which would blur the tact into a mand. Vary exemplars early (many different dogs, not one) so the tact comes under control of the relevant features rather than one specific picture. A frequent design error: running tact trials while the child clearly wants the item—if the MO is active, you’re training a mand and calling it a tact.

    Transfer trials: move a response across operants

    Transfer (or “transfer of stimulus control”) procedures get a response that exists under one antecedent to occur under another. The classic sequence uses the echoic as a bridge: to establish a mand, you might run echoic-to-mand transfer—contrive the MO, model the word (“Say ‘ball'”), reinforce the echoic, then immediately re-present the MO alone and reinforce the independent mand. The same logic runs tact-to-intraverbal, receptive-to-tact, and so on. The goal every time is to fade the supplementary prompt so the natural antecedent takes over stimulus control.

    Error correction and prompting

    When a learner errs, a standard four-step correction works across operants: model the correct response, have the learner produce it, insert a brief distractor trial, then re-present the original antecedent for an independent response. Use the least intrusive prompt that reliably produces the behavior, and fade it deliberately—prompt dependency is the most common way a program stalls.

    NET vs. DTT: two arrangements, not two philosophies

    Natural environment teaching (NET) embeds instruction in the flow of play and routines, capturing MOs as they arise—ideal for manding and for generalization, because you’re teaching where the behavior will actually be used.     In practice, many teams use the VB-MAPP to place a learner and monitor milestone-level progress, and reach for the ABLLS-R when they need finer resolution to track a dense set of objectives. Neither is a checklist you run once—both are re-administered to drive programming decisions over time.

    Generalizing and Maintaining Verbal Skills

    A mand that only occurs with one therapist, one item, in one room isn’t functional language yet—it’s a trained response with a narrow window. Generalization and maintenance are where verbal behavior becomes usable, and they have to be programmed, not hoped for.

    • Teach across multiple exemplars. Vary items, people, settings, and instructions from the start so responses come under control of the relevant features rather than one incidental stimulus. A tact taught with a single flashcard often fails the moment the picture changes.
    • Recruit the natural community of reinforcement. Skills persist when the everyday environment reinforces them. Train parents, teachers, and peers to respond to the learner’s mands and tacts so the behavior keeps paying off after the session ends.
    • Program common stimuli and loosen control. Bring elements of the natural setting into teaching, and vary prompts and materials so the learner doesn’t bind the response to one narrow cue.
    • Thin and vary reinforcement for maintenance. Move from continuous to intermittent schedules and mix reinforcers to build durable responding that survives real-world delays.
    • Probe untrained conditions. Don’t assume generalization—measure it. Run periodic probes with new people and settings, and add training if the response doesn’t travel.

    Common Verbal Behavior Mistakes

    • Teaching tacts and expecting mands to emerge. The operants are functionally independent. A learner who tacts “bubbles” beautifully may still not mand for bubbles when they want them. Program the mand under its own MO—don’t assume it transfers for free.
    • Neglecting the motivating operation for mands. Running “mand” trials when the child doesn’t want the item trains something, but not a mand. If the MO isn’t in play, capture or contrive it before you prompt—or you’re teaching a tact wearing a mand’s name tag.
    • Prompt dependency. Leaning on echoic or gestural prompts and never fading them produces responses that only occur when prompted. Fade deliberately, use the least intrusive prompt that works, and probe for independent responding often. This is common enough that the VB-MAPP tracks it as a formal barrier.
    • Confusing topography with function. “He said ‘cookie'” tells you nothing about which operant occurred. Ask what controlled it—the MO, a nonverbal stimulus, a verbal stimulus—before recording mastery.
    • Over-relying on one arrangement. All-DTT programs can build responses that never generalize; all-NET programs can under-teach skills that need massed practice. Match the arrangement to the operant and the goal.
    • Skipping listener and intraverbal repertoires. Mands and tacts get the attention, but weak intraverbal and listener skills cap conversational and academic progress. Assess and build them deliberately.

    A Worked Example: Operant Analysis in Practice

    Methodology sticks better when you watch it run. The following is an anonymized composite.

    A 4-year-old on an early-intervention caseload could label dozens of items on flashcards—strong tacts—but rarely asked for anything, instead pulling adults by the hand or crying when he wanted something out of reach. The team’s first instinct was “he has the words, he’s just not using them.” A functional read told a different story: the child’s tact repertoire was solid, but his mand repertoire was nearly empty, and the two are independent. Labeling “juice” on a card had never once produced juice—only praise. There was no history of the vocal response paying off under a state of wanting.

    The plan targeted the mand directly. During snack, staff contrived the MO—offered a preferred cup, let him take a sip, then held it just out of reach and paused.
