What types of validity were tested — content validity, criterion validity, construct validity? What are the internal consistency coefficients and test-retest reliability estimates? A tool without a published technical manual or with sparse psychometric data should be used with significant caution and should not serve as the sole basis for intervention selection.
Second, consider whether the tool's domain coverage matches the clinical question. If you are trying to identify targets for verbal behavior programming, a tool that primarily assesses adaptive behavior may not provide sufficient granularity. If you are trying to assess community integration skills for a young adult, a tool designed for preschool-age children with early language delays is probably not the right instrument. Map the clinical question to the tool's scope before administering.
Third, evaluate administration requirements. Some tools require specific materials, specific training, or specific environmental conditions to produce valid results. Cutting corners on administration — skipping items, using non-standardized prompting, testing in a noisy environment — degrades the validity of the data even if the tool itself is well-validated.
Fourth, triangulate across methods. No single assessment tool provides a complete picture of a client's repertoire. Structured assessments should be supplemented with direct observation in natural environments, caregiver and teacher report, and review of historical data. Clinical prescriptions that rely on a single data source are inherently fragile. A multi-method assessment approach provides converging evidence that supports more confident intervention selection and better justification for insurance authorization and treatment intensity decisions.
