General CEU: Teaching Operant and Respondent Conditioning: Communicating and Collaborating with Teachers and Other Non-ABA Professionals

Teaching Operant and Respondent Conditioning: Communicating and Collaborating with Teachers and Other Non-ABA Professionals is the kind of topic that looks straightforward until it collides with the speed, ambiguity, and competing demands of classrooms, school meetings, data review, and staff consultation. In Teaching Operant and Respondent Conditioning Teacher Collaboration, for this course, the practical stakes show up in feasible school-based support, stronger collaboration, and better student participation, not in abstract discussion alone.

Course Description

Many new behavior analysts struggle with fluency when translating between precise behavioral terminology and lay language. In this presentation, we model how to approach several foundation-level behavioral principles when teaching them or discussing them with teachers, parents, or other non-ABA professionals. First, we explore respondent conditioning, reframing it as "automatic learning" and discuss stimulus-response pairings in a variety of contexts outside of Pavlov's lab. Then, we explore the basics of discriminating between positive and negative reinforcement and punishment, followed by how to relatably teach extinction. Finally, we review several different group or classroom intervention styles that can be used by teachers or even parents at home and model how to discuss the benefits and methodologies of these programs in lay language.

What You'll Learn

  1. Compare the operational definitions of positive and negative reinforcement and punishment as consequent strategies.
  2. Explain how the addition or removal of stimuli determines whether a consequence functions as reinforcement or punishment.
  3. Apply examples of each consequence type in applied settings and their effects on the probability of future behavior.
