Ethics CEU: Supporting Sexual Health Education: Why It Matters and How to Start

Sexual health education is one of the most critically underserved areas in the lives of individuals with developmental disabilities. Despite the fact that sexuality is a fundamental aspect of human development and wellbeing, individuals with disabilities are routinely denied access to comprehensive, age-appropriate sexual health education.

Course Description

As a Sexual Health Educator, BCBA, and Registered Behaviour Analyst in Ontario (RBA), I will be sharing insights into why it is critical to acknowledge and support the sexual health needs of the individuals we serve. This session will highlight the unique challenges faced by people with varying abilities in accessing comprehensive and respectful sexual health education and why proactive support in this area is essential to their overall well-being and autonomy.

What You'll Learn

  1. Review and discuss prevalence data showing gaps in sexual health education or individuals with developmental disabilities and identify common consequences of neglect in this area.
  2. Identify the ethical obligations of teaching/supporting sexual health education in conjunction with ABA strategies.
  3. Demonstrate an understanding of areas that can be supported daily with respects to sexual health education. Participants will also review and analyze appropriate ABA strategies, case-based decision-making, and data-driven interventions in sexual health.
