Course Description

Burnout is a significant threat to ethical and sustainable practice in behavior analysis, with studies reporting moderate-to-high burnout among many practitioners (e.g., 72% in a sample of 826 ABA providers; Slowiak & DeLongchamp, 2021). This presentation reframes burnout as more than exhaustion, integrating research and lived experience, especially for neurodivergent (ND) professionals, for whom masking, sensory load, and executive-function strain can intensify risk. Participants will learn to recognize key indicators of burnout, understand neurodivergent-specific contributors, and apply an ACTr-informed lens to increase psychological flexibility. Emphasis is placed on values alignment, energy-based productivity, job crafting, and ND-affirming self-advocacy as ethical responsibilities that maintain competence and protect client dignity. Attendees will leave with practical tools and a plan for one values-aligned, ND-affirming committed action to support sustainable, effective practice.

What You'll Learn

  1. Identify ethical obligations related to burnout (e.g., Maintaining Competence 1.06, Providing Effective Treatment 2.01, Addressing Conditions Interfering with Service Delivery 2.19).
  2. Describe burnout indicators and ND-specific contributors (masking/camouflaging, sensory load, executive-function strain) and their impact on practice.
  3. Apply an ACT-informed approach to plan one values-aligned, ND-affirming committed action that sustains professional competence and client dignity.
