Preparing and Troubleshooting for a Functional Analysis belongs in serious BCBA study because it shapes whether behavior-analytic decisions stay useful once they leave a clean training example and enter caregiver coaching, home routines, team meetings, and values-sensitive decision making. In Preparing and Troubleshooting for a Functional Analysis, for this course, the practical stakes show up in better alignment between intervention and the family context in which it must survive, not in abstract discussion alone.

To treat challenging behavior effectively, its function must be identified so function-based intervention can be implemented. To determine the function of challenging behavior, a functional behavior assessment (FBA) needs to be conducted. Across the components of the FBA, the experimental functional analysis (EFA; Iwata et al., 1982/94) is the gold standard assessment to evaluate the function of challenging behavior. That said, the EFA does not always result in differentiated results. This presentation provides guidance in troubleshooting an EFA that resulted in undifferentiated results. However, due to its conceptual nature, components of EFA are reviewed, making this presentation also beneficial for individuals who are preparing to conduct an EFA in increasing the likelihood that the EFA will lead to differentiated results. Learning objectives: Learners will be able to problem solve potential reasons for the undifferentiated results in an EFA. Learners will learn what to do to determine if challenging behavior is maintained by automatic reinforcement. Learners will describe the most common components included in the test conditions and control condition of an experimental functional analysis.
