Course Description

ABA has shown to be effective in teaching autistic individuals language, social, and daily living skills. Despite its success, there have been recent criticisms of ABA procedures and goals. However, the generality of these claims is not well understood, and it is not yet clear how autistic individuals at large perceives behavioral interventions, or if these perspectives generalize across the spectrum. In this symposium, the researchers will a) present data on social validity of ABA for autistic participants from their own perspectives, and data on goals and interventions prescribed by BCBAs b) outline a trauma-informed care management service for clients with disabilities c) present a case study on how ABA procedures significantly impacted the life of an individual with autism by including the participant and stakeholders in the decision making, using a multidisciplinary approach. Although the recent criticisms of ABA goals and procedures are not consistent with those in the empirical literature, such data in the clinical setting are absent, as well as data on from multidisciplinary approaches. Recommendations for continued analysis of concerns about ABA services will be discussed.

What You'll Learn

  1. State the prevalence of social validity data obtained from autistic individuals in ABA research and outline the general perceptions of the clients.
  2. Describe what the data show from the sample on how often BCBAs are prescribing "stim" re-duction goals or using punishment interventions.
  3. Describe what "trauma informed care management" is and how it benefits clients.
