Join Free →Practitioners in applied behavior analysis (ABA) and special education regularly experience high rates of emotional exhaustion, compassion fatigue, and burnout (Dysart, 2022; McDermott, 2023). These challenges underscore the urgent need for accessible, research-based wellness interventions that do not require prior yoga experience or specialized resources. This presentation introduces a trauma-informed mindfulness and yoga framework tailored to ABA and special education contexts, emphasizing inclusive, neurodiversity-affirming strategies grounded in empirical evidence. The model integrates techniques from chair-based yoga (McCabe-Maucher, 2015), trauma-informed breathwork (Barudin, 2021), and micro-mindfulness routines supported by neuroscience and psychophysiological research (Ammon, 2024; Tiwari, 2025). Historical perspectives provided by Tiwari (2025) highlight the century-long evolution of yoga therapy, originating from Swami Kuvalayananda's scientific inquiries into the physiological effects of asana and breath control. This legacy is reinforced by contemporary findings from LeBrun (2023) and Hagley (2025), which illustrate measurable benefits of school-based yoga and mindfulness on self-regulation, stress reduction, and practitioner engagement. Participants will learn to incorporate brief, evidence-supported practices such as box breathing, balloon breathing, and chair-based movement sequences to promote coregulation with learners and enhance focus during transitions. The program includes trauma-informed grounding activities, microbreak integration, and posture-based energy resets, all of which are culturally attuned and adaptable for both classroom and clinical environments (Barudin, 2021; Reiterer, 2023). Furthermore, recent studies show that implementing accessible wellness strategies contributes to improved instructional fidelity, reduced emotional dysregulation, and increased professional sustainability (McDermott, 2023; Olson et al., 2023). The framework also addresses inclusive pedagogy, drawing on culturally responsive adaptations for Indigenous learners (Barudin, 2021) and aligning with equity-focused service delivery goals. This paper empowers practitioners to adopt a practical wellness toolkit rooted in historical and contemporary scientific evidence, enhancing their ability to deliver high-quality behavioral support while fostering personal well-being. The approach is especially suitable for ABA and special education practitioners seeking realistic wellness options that align with ABA values and trauma-informed care principles.
