ItsNotBinary - Avoiding Black & White Thinking matters because it changes what a BCBA notices when decisions have to hold up in clinic sessions and day-to-day service delivery. In Avoiding Black & White Thinking, for this course, the practical stakes show up in service continuity, accurate reporting, and defensible clinical decisions, not in abstract discussion alone.

Drawing from experience in behavioral health and neurodiversity advocacy, Ralston explores how rule-governed behavior and relational framing contribute to the emotional appeal of black-and-white thinking, as well as how uncertainty can evoke avoidance responses. Attendees will analyze how dichotomous thinking appears in professional judgment, social media, and daily interactions, particularly in conversations about neurodiversity and diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). Participants will identify observable examples of binary attitudes and biases, and learn to apply self-management strategies such as self-monitoring and rule revision. These tools are intended to increase psychological flexibility and promote context-sensitive responding. The session emphasizes practical applications that behavior analysts can use to foster more inclusive, values-aligned communication and behavior across clinical, supervisory, and social contexts.
