General CEU: FBA to BIP - Part 1: FBA Foundations & Functional Thinking in Schools

FBA to BIP - Part 1: FBA Foundations & Functional Thinking in Schools matters because it changes what a BCBA notices when decisions have to hold up in school teams and classroom routines, busy classrooms and teacher-managed routines. In FBA Foundations & Functional Thinking in Schools (Part 1), for this course, the practical stakes show up in feasible school-based support, stronger collaboration, and better student participation, not in abstract discussion alone.

Course Description

This section grounds participants in the practical and legal realities of conducting Functional Behavior Assessments (FBAs) within school settings. Participants will learn how to collect and interpret behavior data in classrooms, collaborate with educational teams, and generate function-based hypotheses—all while navigating the constraints and opportunities unique to public education environments. Using Jamie, a 5th grade student, as a case study, BCBAs will apply tools and strategies that are realistic, ethical, and impactful in real-world schools.

What You'll Learn

  1. Explain the purpose and legal context of conducting FBAs in public school environments.
  2. Collect and analyze school-based ABC data to identify potential behavior functions.
  3. Integrate multiple school-friendly data sources (e.g., teacher input, classroom observations) into a comprehensive FBA framework.
