Supervision CEU: Invited Address: Detecting and Managing Effects of Procedural Fidelity Errors

Procedural fidelity — the degree to which intervention procedures are implemented as designed — is a cornerstone assumption of behavior analytic practice. When BCBAs design an intervention based on functional assessment findings, evaluate its effectiveness using behavioral data, and make treatment decisions based on those data, they are assuming that the procedures were implemented as intended.

Course Description

Procedural fidelity refers to the extent to which procedures are implemented as designed or described. Fidelity is a critical component in the implementation of behavior interventions, directly influencing the efficacy and consistency of treatment outcomes. This symposium includes three presentations that delve into different facets of procedural fidelity, including innovative measurement techniques, effective identification methods for these errors within behavior-reduction procedures, and the nuanced impacts of fidelity errors across behavior maintained by positive and negative reinforcement. Collectively, these presentations aim to advance understanding of procedural fidelity and offer practical insights for behavior analysts to refine their research and practice.

What You'll Learn

  1. Describe how fidelity errors can be detrimental to or facilitate treatment outcomes.
  2. Identify multiple strategies for measuring procedural fidelity.
  3. Describe differences in effects of extremely low fidelity in the context of positive and negative reinforcement.

About the Instructor

CS
Claire St. Peter

Dr. Claire St. Peter received her Ph.D. from the University of Florida in 2006, after which she immediately joined the faculty at West Virginia University (WVU). She is now the WVU Eberly Family Professor of Outstanding Service and Chair of the WVU Department of Psychology. Dr. St. Peter’s research focuses on ways to build new skills for learners, with a particular emphasis on school contexts. This interest, along with the observation that things don't always go as planned, resulted in a fascination with the details about the fidelity with which behavioral procedures are implemented and what happens when fidelity varies or decreases dramatically.
