Ethics CEU: Beyond Compliance: Practicing Ethical Congruence

There is a meaningful difference between a behavior analyst who follows the BACB Ethics Code because consequences for non-compliance are likely and one who behaves ethically because their professional identity is organized around values that are consistent with the code's requirements. Caterina Griffith's course, developed under the Hope Abounds Behavioral Health ACE Provider umbrella, targets this distinction directly.

Course Description

Beyond Compliance: Practicing Ethical Congruence 1 ETHICS CEU | Hope Abounds Behavioral Health | ACE Provider #IP-24-11224 Ethical behavior in applied settings requires more than knowledge of the BACB Ethics Code. It requires consistent implementation of ethical standards across changing environments. This course examines how compliance and congruence work together to maintain integrity within professional practice. Using principles of behavior analysis, participants will analyze the environmental variables that influence ethical responding, identify motivating operations that strengthen or weaken adherence to ethical codes, and develop self-management systems that support consistent ethical behavior. Topics include the function of values as motivating operations, identifying and preventing ethical drift, and arranging antecedent and reinforcement conditions to sustain ethical responding over time. Upon completion, participants will be able to: Apply Task List items A-2, A-4, and E-2 to real-world ethical decision-making.Define and operationalize "ethical congruence" within a behavior analytic framework.Use self-management and environmental strategies to prevent ethical drift.Integrate values-driven motivation with ongoing compliance to the BACB Ethics Code (2022). This course reinforces that compliance remains essential—but when paired with values-based congruence, it produces stable, generalized, and sustainable ethical behavior across settings.
