General CEU: BEHP1161: Practical Functional Assessment and Treatment of Problem Behavior

BEHP1161: Practical Functional Assessment and Treatment of Problem Behavior matters because it changes what a BCBA notices when decisions have to hold up in case conceptualization, intervention design, staff training, and literature-informed problem solving. In Practical Functional Assessment and Treatment of Problem, for this course, the practical stakes show up in stronger conceptual consistency and better translational decision making, not in abstract discussion alone.

Course Description

Literature reviews reveal that larger reductions in problem behavior are evident when a functional analysis is part of the functional assessment process (Campbell, 2002; Hayvaert et al., 2012). Nevertheless, most BCBAs do not conduct functional analyses prior to addressing a severe problem (Oliver, Pratt, & Normand, 2015). This course provides content relevant to closing this apparent research-to-practice gap. Interview-informed, synthesized contingency analyses (IISCA) (Hanley, Jin, Vanselow, & Hanratty, 2014) are emphasized for enhancing the speed, safety and efficacy of functional analyses. Procedures for maximizing the efficacy of skill-based treatments in general and of functional communication and delay tolerance in particular are also emphasized.
