The selection of assessment tools for Applied Behavior Analysis treatment of autistic individuals is one of the most consequential decisions a behavior analyst makes, yet the field lacks a unified approach to this process. Different organizations use different assessment instruments based on historical precedent, staff familiarity, or availability rather than systematic evaluation of psychometric properties and clinical utility.

However, recent advancements, such as the publication of the Council for Autism Service Providers' (CASP) Practice Guidelines (Ver. 3.0) and the ASD assessment guidelines collaborative project by CASP and the Association of Professional Behavior Analysts (APBA), offer valuable frameworks and guidance for this process. This presentation, a collaborative initiative of CASP's Client Outcomes SIG, seeks to equip practitioners and service provider organizations with a comprehensive roadmap for utilizing these practice guidelines in the selection of commercially available assessment tools. Specifically, it will present a framework that encompasses essential psychometric and practical considerations, empowering practitioners to make informed decisions regarding assessment tool selection for individuals with autism. Please contact Paula Pompa-Craven at Paula.Pompa-Craven@essc.org should you have any APA questions or concerns!
