Course Description

As behavior analysts, we are often asked to support our clients with their augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) goals. This presentation will discuss both scope of practice and scope of competence when it comes to AAC. We will review our ethical code and how it can apply to AAC and our clients. We will also cover some best practice strategies and talk about what a referral for a comprehensive AAC assessment could look like. Finally, we will explore common barriers to the use and adoption of AAC. Learning Objectives: Participants will identify the difference between scope of practice and scope of competence when it comes to Augmentative and Alternative Communication. Participants will be able to list components of an AAC assessment and identify who is trained to engage in this type of assessment. Participants will identify potential barriers to the use and adoption of AAC, with particular attention paid to speech-generating devices.

  1. Identify both scope of practice and scope of competence when it comes to AAC.
