★ The Verdict

PBIS is ABA wearing a school-friendly coat—use it to embed behavioral systems across an entire campus.

01Research in Context

01

What this study did

Foti et al. (2015) wrote a narrative review. They argued that school-wide PBIS is simply ABA applied to every kid in every classroom. The paper shows BCBAs how to sell district leaders on the science behind PBIS.

02

What they found

The authors found PBIS uses the same three ABA levers you already know: define target behaviors, measure them, and reinforce the ones you want. They say PBIS is the easiest way to move ABA from one kid to the kids.

03

How this fits with other research

Lawson et al. (2025) extends the idea. Their RCT gave teachers a PBIS toolkit and fidelity rose, proving the model can travel from paper to classroom.

Kok et al. (2026) adds a warning. Their meta-analysis shows classroom behavior interventions work during treatment but fade after sessions stop. The papers do not clash; Kok measures short-term single-case effects while F et al. describe a whole-school system meant to run for years.

Wine et al. (2022) shows the same school-wide logic works outside behavior. They used PBIS-style tactics for COVID safety and hit a large share mask use. The pattern: once staff taste system-level ABA, they apply it to any problem.

04

Why it matters

If you consult for schools, stop selling 'ABA.' Sell 'PBIS' instead. Principals already know the term, and it unlocks funding streams. Use the PBIS framework to sneak in your reinforcement schedules, data walls, and function-based thinking district-wide.

03Original abstract

Horner and Sugai (2015) recently wrote a manuscript providing an overview of school-wide positive behavioral interventions and supports (PBIS) and why it is an example of applied behavior analysis at the scale of social importance. This paper will describe why school-wide PBIS is important to behavior analysts, how it helps promote applied behavior analysis in schools and other organizations, and how behavior analysts can use this framework to assist them in the promotion and implementation of applied behavior analysis at both at the school and organizational level, as well as, the classroom and individual level.
