01Research in Context
What this study did
Jimenez-Gomez et al. (2022) reviewed the first ABA book on multiculturalism. The editors packed 17 chapters with case stories, role-play scripts, and a ready-to-use test bank. The goal is to help trainers teach budding BCBAs how to work respectfully with families from many cultures.
What they found
The book gives you concrete tools you can use tomorrow. You get caregiver interview forms, self-check cultural quizzes, and class activities. Each chapter ends with discussion questions so you can practice before you meet real families.
How this fits with other research
Baires et al. (2023) took the book's broad ideas and built a step-by-step frame for Latino families. They show how to weave values like familismo into treatment plans.
Rosales et al. (2021) asked Latino parents what blocks them from ABA. Language gaps and low service awareness topped the list. Their findings match the book's case stories, so you can use both together to prep staff.
Jones et al. (2020) audited JABA articles and found most skip race, income, and gender data. The new book fills that blind spot by pushing us to collect and use those facts.
Why it matters
You no longer have to build cultural training from scratch. Pair the book's activities with the Latino framework from Baires et al. (2023) and the barrier list from Rosales et al. (2021). Run one role-play this week. Ask caregivers which cultural values matter most to them. Write those values on the behavior plan. Small step, big payoff in trust.
