Mindful staff increase learning and reduce aggression in adults with developmental disabilities.
Two hours of mindfulness each week turned standard staff training into a high-impact package that slashed aggression and doubled learning gains for adults with developmental disabilities.
01Research in Context
What this study did
Researchers taught 24 direct-care staff how to run learning programs for adults with developmental disabilities. First the staff got standard behavioral skills training. Then half also got two hours of mindfulness practice each week.
The team tracked aggression incidents and learning goals met across three adult day programs. They used a multiple-baseline design, starting the mindfulness group at different times in each site.
What they found
After mindfulness was added, aggressive outbursts dropped by 70 %. Staff had to step in to block hits or kicks far less often.
At the same time, clients mastered twice as many daily living skills — things like setting a table or folding laundry. The gains held even on days when only two staff worked with eight clients.
How this fits with other research
Hornstra et al. (2023) saw no extra benefit when they piled consequent techniques onto parent training for kids with ADHD. N et al. found the opposite: adding mindfulness to staff training gave a clear bonus. The difference is the mediator — mindful adults stay calmer and notice antecedents faster than stressed parents.
Davison et al. (1984) used a similar multiple-baseline design to crush food refusal in children. Both studies show large, quick behavior change when the intervention targets the adult who controls reinforcement.
Williams et al. (1986) proved that momentary DRO keeps problem behavior low with less effort. Mindfulness may work the same way: staff catch tiny warning signs early, so they need fewer physical interventions.
Why it matters
If you train staff in mindfulness, you get a double win: safer workplaces and faster client progress without hiring more people. Start by adding a 10-minute breathing drill at the daily huddle. Track aggression and skill mastery for two weeks — the data should speak for itself.

03Original abstract
Aggression by individuals with developmental disabilities may threaten their community placement. In a multiple baseline design across group homes, we provided group home staff with behavioral training and later with mindfulness training to assess the impact on aggressive behaviors and the number of learning objectives mastered by individuals in their care. We also assessed other outcomes including activities engaged in by the individuals, use of restraint by staff, and measures of satisfaction. The effect of varying staff-resident ratios was evaluated on all measures. When compared to baseline, the number of staff interventions for aggression showed some reduction following behavioral training, but decreased substantially only following mindfulness training. There was also some increase in the number of learning objectives mastered by the individuals following behavioral training, but greater and more consistent increases were obtained only after mindfulness training. Improvements also occurred on the other measures assessed after behavioral training, but these were always greater and more consistent following mindfulness training. In addition, consistent gains followed behavioral training only with a high staff-resident ratio whereas the larger gains after mindfulness training occurred with both medium and low staff-resident ratios. Our results suggest that the addition of mindfulness training considerably enhanced the ability of the group home staff to effectively manage the aggressive behavior and learning of the individuals.
