01Research in Context

01

What this study did

Saunders et al. (2005) looked at 222 five-year-olds with autism. They asked: does how well a child talks predict other skills?

The team scored each child’s expressive language. They also rated overall development and autism symptoms.

02

What they found

Kids who spoke better also scored higher on general development. They showed milder autism symptoms too.

In short, stronger words went hand-in-hand with stronger minds and calmer behavior.

03

How this fits with other research

Leezenbaum et al. (2019) extends the picture. They found a subgroup of preschoolers whose talking is ahead of their understanding. These kids are younger, have lower non-verbal IQ, and more social problems. Saunders et al. (2005) showed the upside of good talking; Leezenbaum et al. (2019) warn that talking alone can hide weaker areas.

Kydd et al. (1982) shows how to grow talking. They taught two school-age kids to use “is/are” with loose training. The kids later used the words in free play. Put together, the 2005 paper tells you talking matters, and the 1982 paper tells you how to teach it.

Anonymous (2021) adds a tool note. They showed the ADOS-2 expressive-language score is valid for fragile-X teens. If you use ADOS-2 with young autistic kids, you can trust the expressive score for tracking progress.

04

Why it matters

Check expressive language first. A quick language score gives you a snapshot of overall development and symptom load. If words are strong, still probe non-verbal skills; they may lag behind. If words are weak, make talking a top goal and use loose-training tactics to help words spread to play and daily life.

03Original abstract

The age of detection of autism varies and may be linked to differences in the severity of disturbance and any associated retardation. Symptom intensity, overall language level, age of recognition of first disturbances and level of psychological development were examined in 222 children with pervasive developmental disorder with a mean age of 5 years. Results showed a positive correlation between language level and psychological development as well as between language level and intensity of symptoms. The central position of language in psychological development is discussed.
