Examining the Mediating Role of Mindful Parenting: A Study on the Relationship Between Parental Emotion Regulation Difficulties and Problem Behaviors of Children with ASD.
Teaching parents to pause and parent mindfully can soften the blow their emotion struggles have on their autistic child's behavior.

What this study did
Aydin (2023) asked a simple question: does mindful parenting act like a shock absorber between a parent's own emotion troubles and their autistic child's problem behaviors?
The team surveyed parents of children with autism. They measured how well parents handle their own feelings, how mindfully they parent, and how often their kids show tough behaviors.
What they found
Parents who scored high on mindful parenting had fewer emotion-regulation struggles and their kids had fewer problem behaviors.
Mindful parenting only partly explained the link. It buffered the impact, but did not erase it.
How this fits with other research
Zachary et al. (2019) already showed that a parent's emotion skills predict how fast standard parent training works. Aydan now adds that mindful parenting is one reason why.
Leung et al. (2016) ran an RCT and proved parent education cuts both child problems and parent stress. Aydan's mediation model hints that mindful parenting could be the active ingredient inside those programs.
Ağırkan et al. (2023) meta-analysis found Turkish group psychoeducation gives medium relief to parent distress. Aydan agrees on the direction but zooms in on the mechanism: mindful parenting is part of the pathway.
Why it matters
You can add two-minute mindful parenting drills to any parent coaching session. Try a brief body scan before practice trials or teach parents to notice their own rising anger and label it out loud. These micro-skills may lower their stress and, in turn, reduce their child's problem behaviors without extra hours of therapy.

03Original abstract
Parental emotion regulation plays a vital role in the parent-child relationship. This study examines the mediating role of mindful parenting in the relationship between parental emotion regulation difficulties and problem behaviors of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The study was conducted with 273 parents of children with ASD in Istanbul. The study findings revealed a significant yet negative correlation between mindful parenting and emotion regulation difficulty and problem behaviors. The study model highlighted that emotion regulation difficulties significantly predicted mindful parenting and the child's problem behavior, whereas mindful parenting significantly predicted the child's problem behavior. Additionally, the study findings indicated that mindful parenting was a partial mediator.
