Daily health symptoms of mothers of adolescents and adults with fragile x syndrome and mothers of adolescents and adults with autism spectrum disorder.
Daily aches and fatigue pile up for moms of teens and adults with autism—screen and treat these symptoms to keep caregiver stress from spilling into sessions.
01Research in Context
What this study did
Meier et al. (2012) asked moms to fill out a short health diary every day for a week. They compared mothers of teens and adults with autism or fragile X to mothers of similar-age adults without disabilities.
The team counted how often each mom wrote down headaches, back pain, upset stomach, or fatigue.
What they found
Moms of people with autism or fragile X listed twice as many daily aches and pains. The most common complaints were tired muscles, headaches, and feeling worn out.
These mothers were not sick in a single big way; they just felt lousy day after day.
How this fits with other research
Lee et al. (2023) and Lovell et al. (2021) extend this picture. They show that poor sleep is the engine behind the same daily fatigue and frustration. Treat sleep and you may trim the symptom list E et al. saw.
Seymour et al. (2013) adds a twist: fatigue, not bad coping skills, links child behavior problems to mom stress. This agrees with E et al. that the body’s ‘run-down’ feeling is the key target, not counseling alone.
Sharp et al. (2010) looked one step earlier and found that simply feeling time-pressed predicts mental-health strain. E et al. now show that pressure shows up in the body as daily pain and tiredness.
Why it matters
During family sessions, ask Mom how she slept last night and if anything hurts today. A quick 0-10 rating takes one minute. If the numbers stay high, link her to sleep-hygiene handouts, respite vouchers, or tele-health primary care. Small gains in caregiver health can mean longer, calmer teaching sessions for your client.

03Original abstract
Health symptoms of mothers of adolescents and adults with fragile X syndrome (FXS; n = 112) were compared to a nationally-representative sample of mothers of similarly-aged children without disabilities (n = 230) as well as to a sample of mothers of adolescents and adults with autism spectrum disorders (ASD; n = 96). Health symptoms experienced in the previous 24 h were recorded during 8 consecutive days of a daily diary study. Both mothers of a son or daughter with FXS and mothers of a son or daughter with ASD had a higher proportion of days with headaches, backaches, muscle soreness, fatigue, and hot flashes than mothers of children without disabilities. Mothers of children with disabilities appear to be at particular risk for health problems, highlighting a need for comprehensive services for families across the lifespan.
