★ The Verdict

The Spanish RBS-R is ready for everyday use to measure repetitive behavior severity in Spanish-speaking clients with autism.

01Research in Context

01

What this study did

The team translated the Repetitive Behavior Scale-Revised into Spanish. They then checked that the new form still measured the same six groups of behaviors in Spanish-speaking people with autism.

Parents or caregivers filled out the survey. The researchers ran math tests to see if scores were steady over time and if the six factors held together.

02

What they found

The Spanish RBS-R kept the same six-factor shape as the English original. Reliability and validity numbers were good, so the scale can be trusted for clinical use.

In plain words, you can now score how severe repetitive behaviors are in Spanish-speaking clients and feel sure the numbers mean something.

03

How this fits with other research

Kleinert et al. (2007) did the first independent check of the RBS-R in autism. Stewart et al. (2018) extends that work by showing the tool holds up in a new language.

Godoy-Giménez et al. (2018) also tested a Spanish autism scale, but their Broad Autism Phenotype Questionnaire had weak spots. The Spanish RBS-R did not share those problems, giving clinicians a cleaner option for repetitive behaviors.

Vrancic et al. (2002) validated a Spanish autism screener by phone. Their study and this one both expand language access, yet the RBS-R adds fine-grained data after the child is already diagnosed.

04

Why it matters

If you serve Spanish-speaking families, you no longer have to guess about repetitive behavior severity. Hand the caregiver the Spanish RBS-R, get a quick total score, and use it to set goals or track change. One concrete step: add the form to your intake packet today so you start every case with solid baseline data.

03Original abstract

Restricted and repetitive behavior (RRB) is one of the two key diagnostic features of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). DSM-5 highlights the importance of severity-based diagnostic modifiers assigned on the basis of intensity of needed supports. Therefore, there is a need for available measures that assess the severity of RRB. The repetitive behavior scale-revised (RBS-R) is probably the most used informant-based rating scale for the assessment of RRB and interests observed in ASD. The present study examined the psychometric properties of the Spanish version of the RBS-R in a sample of 233 participants with ASD, aged 3 to 63 years. Results revealed a six-factor model, good internal consistency, and concurrent-divergent validity. These findings suggest the utility of the Spanish version of RBS-R.
