The relationship of Asperger's characteristics and schizotypal personality traits in a non-clinical adult sample.
In everyday adults, autism-like and schizotypal traits often ride together, especially in the social lane.
01Research in Context
What this study did
Plant et al. (2007) asked adults with no diagnosis to fill out two questionnaires. One measured Asperger traits, the other schizotypal traits.
The team wanted to see if people who scored high on one also scored high on the other.
What they found
The two sets of traits moved together. The link was strongest in social and interpersonal areas.
Adults who said they had trouble reading social cues often reported odd beliefs or magical thinking as well.
How this fits with other research
Roane et al. (2001) built the Autism-Spectrum Quotient that this study used. Their work showed the tool can flag autism traits in bright adults.
Lau et al. (2013) later broke the AQ into five clear factors. Their finer map lets you see which trait cluster, like social skill or narrow focus, is driving any overlap with schizotypy.
Diz et al. (2011) used the same AQ with neurotypical adults but looked at lab attention instead of personality. High AQ scorers got more distracted under heavy visual load. Together these papers show the AQ predicts both personality quirks and real-time performance.
Why it matters
If a client shows social oddities, check for both autism and schizotypal patterns. One questionnaire may not tell the full story. Use the five-factor AQ from Lau et al. (2013) to pinpoint which social domain is affected. Then tailor your social-skills goals to that specific area.

03Original abstract
The study examines the relationship between Asperger's Disorder (AD) and Schizotypal Personality Disorder (SPD), mutually exclusive but similar diagnoses [DSM-IV-TR; American Psychiatric Association (2000). Diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders. Washington, DC: Author]. The literature and comparison of diagnostic criteria suggest that the two disorders may overlap: AD social impairment with SPD interpersonal problems and AD communication deficits with SPD disorganized features. Questionnaire measures of AD and SPD were administered to a large non-clinical adult sample. Consistent with expectations, the Asperger's and Schizotypal questionnaires were positively correlated. Further, the social-interpersonal and communication-disorganized areas were positively correlated, though the relationship between social-interpersonal areas is particularly strong. Future research should continue to explore the relationship between AD and schizotypy to confirm current findings and improve understanding of distinctions between the disorders.
