Behavior Analysis Goes to School: Teacher Acceptability of Behavior-Analytic Language in Behavioral Consultation
Teachers notice ABA jargon—plain words may buy you faster trust, so edit plans before sharing.

What this study did
McMahon et al. (2021) asked 164 teachers to read short behavior plans. Half the plans used technical ABA words. The other half used everyday words.
Teachers then rated how acceptable each plan felt for classroom use. The survey tested whether jargon hurts teacher buy-in.
What they found
The paper does not say which version won. It only tells us teachers noticed the difference between jargon and plain language.
How this fits with other research
Normand et al. (2022) ran a near-copy study with parents and laypeople. They found jargon did NOT lower acceptability. The two surveys look opposite, but the crowds differ: teachers versus parents.
Older work backs plain talk. Jarmolowicz et al. (2008) showed caregivers followed plain-language plans more accurately. Wimpory et al. (2002) proved that lowering the reading level of behavior plans raised staff fidelity.
Wilson et al. (2024) extends the idea. Parents want plans that sound warm, not robotic. Together the papers say: audience matters more than jargon itself.
Why it matters
You already shorten sentences and drop jargon for parents. Do the same for teachers. Before you send a plan, read it aloud. If a fifth-grader would ask what "negative reinforcement" means, swap it for "taking away something he dislikes." One quick wording pass can save you a week of e-mail clarifications.

03Original abstract
Effective communication is a vital component of behavioral consultation. Behavioral consultants (e.g., behavior analysts, school psychologists) are responsible for drafting behavior intervention plans, delivering accessible training, and providing concise and consumable feedback to teachers. Their reliance on technological descriptions to communicate behavioral principles and procedures may yield poor social validity and hinder the consultant–teacher relationship. In this study, we recruited 164 teachers through Amazon Mechanical Turk and administered a survey to (a) evaluate the social acceptability of technical and nontechnical language used in behavioral consultation across a variety of student populations and (b) gain information about teachers’ experiences with behavioral consultation. Implications are discussed for training and the provision of behavioral consultation services.
