1. How many CEUs does a BCBA need per recertification cycle, and how are they categorized?

The BACB requires 32 CEUs per two-year recertification cycle. Within that total, at least 4 must be in ethics and at least 3 must address supervision. The remaining 25 are unrestricted and can be filled by any ACE-approved content. BCBAs who hold active supervision contracts have additional requirements under the 8-hour supervisor training curriculum for new supervisees. CEU categories are assigned by the CE provider at the time of ACE approval, so practitioners should verify classification before assuming a particular course satisfies a specific requirement.

2. What makes a CE provider or course ACE-approved?

ACE approval is granted by the BACB to providers that meet established standards for content quality, instructor qualifications, learning objectives, and assessment procedures. Individual courses or episodes — not just provider organizations — are reviewed for approval. An organization that produces ACE-approved content must ensure that each specific course submitted meets the BACB's criteria. Practitioners can verify a provider's ACE status and the specific courses they have approved through the BACB's website, under the Continuing Education provider search.

3. Can podcast episodes genuinely count as CEUs, or is this a lower-quality form of CE?

ACE-approved podcast episodes carry the same CEU value and recertification credit as in-person workshops or recorded webinars. The format does not determine quality — the content, learning objectives, and completion verification process determine whether the BACB grants approval. That said, the quality of learning that occurs during any CE interaction is partly a function of how the learner engages. Passive listening without active processing typically produces less retention and transfer than formats that require responses, discussion, or application. BCBAs can increase the return on podcast CE by building in deliberate active processing after each episode.

4. What documentation do I need to maintain for podcast-format CEUs?

BACB requires documentation that can be produced during audit: a certificate or record of completion that includes the course title, provider name, CEU value, classification (ethics, supervision, or unrestricted), and completion date. Podcast CE providers that hold ACE approval should issue this documentation electronically upon completion of the episode and any required assessment. Practitioners should store these certificates in a dedicated folder — digital or physical — and verify that the information matches the BACB's required fields before the cycle closes.

5. How should I plan my CEU selection across a two-year recertification cycle?

Divide your requirements by year rather than treating them as a single block: 16 CEUs per year, or roughly 1-2 per month. Identify your required categories first — 4 ethics, 3 supervision — and plan to meet those early in the cycle. Distribute unrestricted CEUs across topics that address identified clinical or professional development gaps. Front-loading CE reduces deadline pressure and allows content to be applied in practice rather than consumed in a rush. A simple tracking spreadsheet updated after each completed CE course provides an accurate running balance throughout the cycle.

6. If I complete more CEUs than required in one cycle, can I carry them over?

The BACB does not permit CEU carryover between recertification cycles. CEUs completed beyond the 32-unit requirement in one cycle do not reduce the requirement in the subsequent cycle. For this reason, the most efficient approach is to meet requirements without substantial excess — though practitioners who pursue CE for genuine professional development rather than compliance will often find that their learning activities generate more credits than the minimum requirement anyway.

7. Are there CEU requirements specific to BCaBAs or RBTs that differ from BCBA requirements?

Yes. BCaBAs have a 20-CEU requirement per recertification cycle, with the same categorical structure as BCBA requirements. RBTs do not have a CEU requirement in the same form — their recertification is based on annual competency assessment and supervision hours rather than a continuing education credit system. For BCaBAs pursuing BCBA certification, CEUs completed during the BCaBA certification period do not automatically transfer or count toward BCBA recertification unless they were completed within the applicable BCBA recertification cycle.

8. How do I know if a specific Behavioral Observations episode qualifies as a supervision CEU versus an unrestricted CEU?

The classification is assigned by the provider at the time of ACE approval and should be clearly indicated on the episode's CE page or in the certificate of completion. Do not assume that a supervision-themed topic automatically classifies as supervision CEUs — the BACB's classification is based on specific content criteria, not topical alignment. If the episode page does not clearly indicate classification, contact the provider directly or search the specific course in the BACB's ACE provider database, which lists approved courses with their classifications.

9. What happens if I fail a BACB audit and my CE documentation is incomplete?

A failed audit can result in certification suspension or revocation, depending on the nature of the documentation gap. The BACB's audit process is random and practitioners cannot predict when they will be selected. If you are audited and cannot produce documentation for claimed CEUs, you will be required to demonstrate compliance within a specified time frame or face credential consequences. Prevention is straightforward: maintain complete, organized documentation throughout the cycle and verify it is complete before submitting your recertification application.

10. Is there a minimum or maximum number of CEUs that can come from a single provider?

The BACB does not impose a cap on how many CEUs can come from a single provider, but they do require that at least some portion of the cycle's CE come from interactions that allow for peer or instructor engagement — this is typically met by live events, webinars with Q&A, or similar interactive formats. Pure self-study formats (including most podcast-based CE) can fulfill a substantial portion of requirements but should be balanced with some interactive learning to ensure both compliance and richer professional development outcomes.
