Podcast CE providers that hold ACE approval should issue this documentation electronically upon completion of the episode and any required assessment. Practitioners should store these certificates in a dedicated folder — digital or physical — and verify that the information matches the BACB's required fields before the cycle closes.
Divide your requirements by year rather than treating them as a single block: 16 CEUs per year, or roughly 1-2 per month. The BACB does not permit CEU carryover between recertification cycles. CEUs completed beyond the 32-unit requirement in one cycle do not reduce the requirement in the subsequent cycle. For this reason, the most efficient approach is to meet requirements without substantial excess — though practitioners who pursue CE for genuine professional development rather than compliance will often find that their learning activities generate more credits than the minimum requirement anyway.
Yes. BCaBAs have a 20-CEU requirement per recertification cycle, with the same categorical structure as BCBA requirements. RBTs do not have a CEU requirement in the same form — their recertification is based on annual competency assessment and supervision hours rather than a continuing education credit system. For BCaBAs pursuing BCBA certification, CEUs completed during the BCaBA certification period do not automatically transfer or count toward BCBA recertification unless they were completed within the applicable BCBA recertification cycle.
The classification is assigned by the provider at the time of ACE approval and should be clearly indicated on the episode's CE page or in the certificate of completion. Do not assume that a supervision-themed topic automatically classifies as supervision CEUs — the BACB's classification is based on specific content criteria, not topical alignment. If the episode page does not clearly indicate classification, contact the provider directly or search the specific course in the BACB's ACE provider database, which lists approved courses with their classifications.
A failed audit can result in certification suspension or revocation, depending on the nature of the documentation gap. The BACB's audit process is random and practitioners cannot predict when they will be selected. If you are audited and cannot produce documentation for claimed CEUs, you will be required to demonstrate compliance within a specified time frame or face credential consequences. Prevention is straightforward: maintain complete, organized documentation throughout the cycle and verify it is complete before submitting your recertification application.
The BACB does not impose a cap on how many CEUs can come from a single provider, but they do require that at least some portion of the cycle's CE come from interactions that allow for peer or instructor engagement — this is typically met by live events, webinars with Q&A, or similar interactive formats. Pure self-study formats (including most podcast-based CE) can fulfill a substantial portion of requirements but should be balanced with some interactive learning to ensure both compliance and richer professional development outcomes.
