Ethics CEU: Through Our Eyes Panel - Shifting the Paradigm: Extinction and Minimizing Harm

The relationship between extinction procedures and the concept of harm reduction represents one of the most important evolving conversations in applied behavior analysis. Traditional behavior analytic practice has relied heavily on extinction as a cornerstone procedure for reducing challenging behavior, yet the application of extinction, particularly with autistic learners, has come under increasing scrutiny from both within the profession and from the disability rights community.

Course Description

Join us for the Through Our Eyes Panel. This panel is made up of autistic disability rights advocates both within and outside of ABA. This professional development event will explore the concepts of extinction and harm reduction and their application in the context of working with autistic learners. Attendees will be introduced to the theoretical foundations of these concepts and learn practical strategies for implementing them in their clinical practice. Through shared lived experiences and research review, BCBAs will develop a deeper understanding of the potential benefits and challenges associated with shifting their approach. By embracing these innovative techniques, BCBAs can enhance the quality of life for autistics while promoting ethical and effective behavior change.

What You'll Learn

  1. Explain extinction and minimizing & reducing harm in behavioral change. Extinction eliminates a conditioned response by removing its reinforcement, while harm reduction minimizes negative consequences of behaviors rather than eradicating them.
  2. Recognize the limitations of focusing solely on extinction or abstinence. For some, complete eradication is unrealistic; harm reduction offers a more viable and compassionate approach.
  3. Examine principles and strategies for minimizing & reducing harm, which aim to reduce negative consequences of behaviors. These include providing safe drug-use equipment, promoting safer sex, offering overdose prevention, and managing harmful behaviors.
