General CEU: REFRAME: Introducing a Person-Affirming Framework (Responsive Engaging Flexible Radical Assent-Based Education)

REFRAME: Introducing a Person-Affirming Framework (Responsive Engaging Flexible Radical Assent-Based Education) matters because it changes what a BCBA notices when decisions have to hold up in supervision meetings, staff training, clinic systems, and performance review. In REFRAME Responsive Engaging Flexible Radical Assent-Based Education, for this course, the practical stakes show up in better performance, lower drift, and more sustainable team development, not in abstract discussion alone.

Course Description

In recent years, studies have been conducted that call on behavior analysts to provide a more compassionate and trauma-informed approach to interventions guided by Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) ((Rajaraman et al., 2021), (Ayre & Krishnamoorthy, 2021), (Hanley, 2021). However, amongst the research, there is little support or instruction as to how to implement this type of care on a systemic and individual level as indicated by the BACB's code of ethics (BACB - Behavior Analyst Certification Board, 2021). Throughout our professional practice history, emerging interventions such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy or Training (ACT) (Hoffmann et al., 2016), (Tarbox et al., 2020), Child-Led or Naturalistic Developmental Behavioral Interventions (NDBI) led interventions ((Cuevas-Parra & Tisdall, 2019), (Schuck et al., 2021)), as well as the Compassionate Care Checklist (Rodriguez et al., 2023) have made promising advances in the direction of therapies guided by ABA. The aim of this curriculum is to provide step by step guidance to not only assess and address skill development needs with learners and stakeholders but also provide additional tools for practitioner self-reflection and self-awareness that can assist in identifying personal biases and barriers to successfully providing care. The proposed curriculum provides an evidenced-based and therapeutic approach to meaningful behavior change that determines learner needs based on a full assessment and analysis of their skills, environment, learning history, Adverse Childhood Events (ACEs) (Wycoff & Franzese, 2019), caregiver and stakeholder needs, current levels of care, and strengths of the individual while establishing a therapeutic relationship that is rooted in the values of the learner. A task analysis for establishing the therapeutic relationship is provided to ensure fidelity across implementers as well as to provide guidance for how to create boundaries that promote health and safety within the environment. Program Development tools are provided so that programming is created in accordance with the stakeholders and learner with social validity at the forefront of the proposed assessments and interventions, measurement and data collection, and modifications. Based on outcomes and data collected in our own agencies, there is growing evidence to support that our implementation of these practices utilizing the aforementioned research demonstrates high rates of skill acquisition while reducing challenging behaviors across meaningful settings and improving quality of life overall.

Margaret Solomon
BCBA, LBA

I am Meg Solomon, the founder and lead Board Certified Behavior Analyst at ABA Across Environments. Although I have always been inspired by children, I never realized that I would find so much fulfillment working in the field of Behavior Analysis.  Upon graduating with my Bachelor’s from Southwestern University, I was unsure of what next step I should take. I lived in both Dallas and Los Angeles and worked in high-paced corporate environments, high-end retail, and with some of the most incredible restaurants and with some of the most talented chefs and winemakers in the world.  As much personal growth as I experienced, I did not feel fulfilled with my career, and I didn’t feel as though I was working inline with my values of helping others. After volunteering with a school in Los Angeles and working many other jobs with children, neuroscience, neurodiversity, play, and developing foundational skills to help further my career, I began working for a national ABA company and soon fell in love with the science of helping others.  I went on to get my Master’s degree from Baylor University in Waco, Texas. In 2015, my husband and I welcomed our first child, and I started my career as a Board Certified Behavior Analyst.  While working in the clinical setting, I noticed that I wanted to do more.  The behavior changes that we were seeing at the centers were not generalizing to the home or community, and parents were struggling.  In 2018, I took a huge leap of faith and started Across Environments. My hope was that these amazing changes would generalize to the home, school, and beyond. Shortly after founding the company, our daughter was born, which added more challenges and inspired more creativity with how to raise our children while building a business.  Being a business owner, a BCBA, and a parent has improved how I use ABA as a tool to help grow and use my values to help others. We use ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) as the foundation for all of our behavior change programs so that we are person-centered and value-based.  We hope to continue to grow and help facilitate positive outcomes for future generations!
