General CEU: Preparing for and Responding to In-Network Audits

In-network audits are a standard feature of behavioral health contracting, and for ABA providers, they carry higher stakes than in many other healthcare disciplines. The data-intensive nature of ABA — with multiple daily session notes, authorization tracking, and individualized treatment plans — creates both greater documentation complexity and greater audit exposure.

Course Description

Health plans have the duty to conduct periodic provider audits and monitor the appropriateness of claims, licensing, and credentialing of providers, and to ensure proper documentation of services as a means of investigating fraud, waste, and abuse. Behavior Health Treatment (BHT) providers are subject to these regulatory audits and corrective actions based on audit findings. Having the right systems in place can strongly influence your audit findings and outcomes. This webinar takes a deeper look into the process of responding to in-network audits and includes practical tips to help navigate BHT provider audits. Key topic areas include: various types of BHT audits conducted by health plans and what to expect from each, documentation that is reviewed by health plans and line items that are subject to review, practices and systems to proactively put in place that will promote regulatory compliance, consequences, and corrective action that occurs upon failing an audit. This workshop is designed to help BHT providers prepare for in-network audits by setting up practices and systems that promote regulatory compliance.

What You'll Learn

  1. Explain that documentation must support the services that are billed. Setting up the right practices up front forms the foundation for a successful audit.
  2. Explain that it is critical to translate the guidelines and expectations of each health plan into automated systems that maintain compliance.
  3. Explain that failure to pass an audit can be costly and lead the health plan to investigate suspected fraud, waste, and abuse.
