Ethics CEU: Ethical Implications to an Interdisciplinary Approach to Service Delivery

Individuals receiving ABA services rarely receive ABA services in isolation. The typical client, particularly a child diagnosed with autism, simultaneously accesses speech-language therapy, occupational therapy, and sometimes physical therapy, counseling, or educational support services.

Course Description

Multidisciplinary collaboration ensures that the best interest of the client remains at the forefront of treatment planning and clinical practices (Ethics Code for Behavior Analysts, 2020). Coordination of care includes dissemination of documentation included in treatment plans and the sharing of assessment data, performance outcomes, and intervention strategies. As the number of individuals diagnosed with autism continues to rise and, in some cases, overshadow the number of clinicians in the field, we must learn to work collaboratively and coordinate efforts. Training is imperative to ensure that all service providers understand what falls within their scope of practice as well as when to request consultation from other interrelated disciplines. Clinicians need to thwart the potential for burn out by working collaboratively and constructively as opposed to in silos. Additionally, a multidisciplinary approach to treatment aligns with best practices across disciplines and provides a rich environment for skill acquisition. In this webinar, clinicians will learn how to ethically stay within one's scope of practice when coordinating care, when to request consultation from a provider in another skilled discipline, and how to work collaboratively and professionally along-side other clinicians while keeping the focus of treatment on the client and his/her family.

What You'll Learn

  1. Evaluate the ethical requirements for multidisciplinary collaboration in ABA service delivery, including scope of practice boundaries.
  2. Apply strategies for coordinating care documentation and sharing assessment data across interrelated disciplines.
  3. Identify potential ethical conflicts that arise in interdisciplinary settings and how to resolve them within the BACB Ethics Code.
